Plain-English summary

A 13-year-old male dog in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, was diagnosed with an infection caused by Clostridioides difficile, which is known to lead to severe diarrhea and inflammation of the colon, especially after the use of certain antibiotics. This type of infection is more commonly seen in humans but can affect other animals as well. The dog likely developed this condition due to recent antibiotic treatment. The outcome of the treatment for this infection was not specified in the report.

Abstract

Clostridioides difficile has been identified as one of the primary etiologic agents of nosocomial diarrhea and pseudomembranous colitis in humans and other mammals associated following broad-spectrum antibiotics use. In Rio de Janeiro, Brazil we describe a case of C. difficile infection (CDI) in a 13-year-old male dog.
