Plain-English summary
Pelvic abscesses, which are pockets of infection in the lower abdomen, can happen in horses of any age or breed. While some smaller abscesses can be treated without surgery, larger ones might need surgical drainage, especially if they cause problems with the intestines. This report shares two cases where veterinarians successfully drained pelvic abscesses in horses using special tubes placed in the chest, along with washing out the area and giving targeted antibiotics. In both cases, the treatment worked well.
Abstract
Pelvic abscesses occur in horses of all ages and breeds. Although conservative management may be successful, surgical drainage may be necessary for larger abscesses or in case of secondary intestinal obstruction. The purpose of this report is to describe two cases of pelvic abscesses that were successfully drained using indwelling chest tubes, repeated lavages and targeted antibiotic treatment.
