Plain-English summary
A six-year-old Quarterhorse stallion was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis (a type of inflammation in the colon), protein losing enteropathy (a condition where the intestines lose protein), and infections from salmonella and histoplasmosis (a fungal infection). For six months before being examined, the horse was slowly losing weight. While in the hospital for 17 days, he developed swelling all over his body and started having severe watery diarrhea on the 12th day. Unfortunately, the horse was euthanized five days later due to the severity of his condition.
Abstract
Ulcerative colitis, protein losing enteropathy and intestinal histoplasmosis-salmonellosis were diagnosed in a six-year-old Quarterhorse stallion. For six months before examination, the horse experienced a slow continual loss of weight. During the 17 day period of hospitalisation the horse developed progressive generalised oedema. On the 12th day of hospitalisation a severe profuse watery diarrhoea began; the horse was killed five days later.
