Plain-English summary

A 14-year-old Quarter Horse had a draining sore on its lower jaw that had been present for eight months and didn't get better with antibiotics or surgery. After further examination, the veterinarians used a special procedure called sialoendoscopy to look inside the salivary duct and found it was blocked by plant material. They also used ultrasound to help with the treatment. The outcome of this procedure was not specified, but it was aimed at relieving the obstruction.

Abstract

A 14-year-old Quarter Horse was examined for a draining tract of 8 months' duration on the right mandible that was non-responsive to antibiotic therapy and surgical therapy. Further investigation and subsequent treatment with sialoendoscopy and ultrasonography were performed to relieve an obstruction of plant awns in the mandibular salivary duct.
