Plain-English summary
A 19-year-old Arabian gelding was brought in because he was limping on his left back leg and his hoof was growing in an unusual shape. X-rays showed a specific area in the bone of his hoof that looked abnormal. The veterinarians found and removed three separate growths called keratomas, which are benign tumors that can develop in the hoof. After the surgery to take out the hoof wall where the growths were located, the treatment was successful.
Abstract
A 19-year-old, Arabian gelding was presented for left hindlimb lameness and deviation of the hoof wall. Radiographs revealed a semicircular, radiolucent area in the lateral edge of the distal phalanx. Three distinct keratomas were successfully removed following hoof wall resection.
