Plain-English summary
A 5-year-old Standardbred mare had a growth in her left eye, which caused her eye to become cloudy and led to blindness. The vet diagnosed her with a teratoid medulloepithelioma, a rare type of eye tumor that starts from the cells in the eye's ciliary body. This type of tumor is not commonly seen in pets or farm animals. Unfortunately, the mare's eye had to be removed to confirm the diagnosis, and the condition is quite serious.
Abstract
Enlargement of the left eye, corneal opacification, and blindness were clinical signs of a teratoid medulloepithelioma in a 5-year-old Standardbred mare. Diagnosis was made on histologic examination of the enucleated eye. Medulloepitheliomas are congenital intraocular tumors arising from primitive ciliary body epithelium. Their development is rare in domestic animals.
