Plain-English summary

A 9-year-old female mixed breed dog was brought in for surgery to remove mammary gland tumors. Before the surgery, X-rays showed a mass in her abdomen that had some mineral deposits. An ultrasound later revealed that her uterus was swollen and filled with fluid, which also had signs of mineralization. During surgery, the vets removed the tumors and her uterus, and tests on the fluid from her uterus showed she had an infection called pyometra. Further examination of the uterine tissue confirmed she had a condition called cystic endometrial hyperplasia, which involves changes in the lining of the uterus along with mineralization.

Abstract

A 9-year-old intact female mixed breed dog was presented for mammary gland tumor surgery, and preoperative radiographs showed a tubular soft tissue opacity mass with multifocal mineralization in the caudoventral abdominal cavity. Subsequent ultrasonography demonstrated uterine dilation with echogenic fluid and endometrial acoustic shadowing consistent with mineralization. Resection of mammary gland tumors and ovariohysterectomy were performed. Pyometra was diagnosed on cytologic examination of uterine fluid. Histopathology of the uterine tissue confirmed a diagnosis of cystic endometrial hyperplasia with uterine mineralization.
