Plain-English summary
In this study, a female horse (mare) and a male horse (gelding) both had stones in their urinary bladders. They underwent a procedure using a special laser to break up the stones, but it didn't work well for either horse. After the laser treatment failed for the gelding, a different type of laser was used, which was successful in breaking up the stone. For the mare, the stone was removed manually through the urethra.
Abstract
Holmium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Ho:YAG) laser lithotripsy was attempted in a mare and a gelding with calculi in the urinary bladder. The procedure was unsuccessful in producing adequate fragmentation of the calculi. In the gelding, pulsed dye laser lithotripsy was subsequently used to fragment the urolith. Manual removal of the urolith via the urethra was performed in the mare.
