Plain-English summary

A 14-year-old Persian cat was taken to the vet because its heart condition, called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), had gotten worse after a serious heart failure episode. This cat had been diagnosed with HCM nearly 13 years earlier. Tests showed that the heart disease was now at an advanced stage, and the cat was experiencing an irregular heartbeat. The cat was sent home with medication, but unfortunately, the outlook for recovery was very poor.

Abstract

A 14-year-old Persian cat was referred for evaluation of the progression of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) after an acute episode of congestive heart failure. The diagnosis of HCM had been made almost 13 years ago. Echocardiography and electrocardiography revealed end-stage hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and multifocal atrial tachycardia. The patient was discharged on medical management with a grave prognosis.
