Plain-English summary
In this study, researchers looked at how well transabdominal ultrasonography (a type of ultrasound) can diagnose small intestinal intussusception, which is when part of the intestine folds into itself, in adult horses. While this method is commonly used for foals (young horses), the study shows it can also quickly and accurately identify the problem in adult horses. The researchers provided a detailed description of what the ultrasound images look like when this condition is present. Overall, the findings suggest that this imaging technique is effective for diagnosing small intestinal intussusception in adult horses.
Abstract
Transabdominal ultrasonography is frequently used to diagnose small intestinal intussusceptions in foals. We demonstrate that transabdominal ultrasonography also provides a rapid and accurate diagnosis of small intestinal intussusception in adult horses. A detailed description of the ultrasonographic appearance is provided.
