Plain-English summary
An 11-year-old Trakehner mare was brought to the vet because there was a firm, movable lump on the left side of her face. X-rays showed a clear, oval-shaped mass, which was identified as a stone in the salivary duct on that side. The vet removed the stone through her mouth, and it was found to have an organic core. The mare healed well after the procedure without any problems.
Abstract
An 11-year-old Trakehner mare was presented with a firm moveable mass over the left maxilla. Radiography revealed a discrete opaque ovoid mass. Sialolithiasis of left parotid duct was diagnosed. The sialolith was excised by using a transoral approach and found to contain an organic nidus. The mare recovered without complications.
