Plain-English summary

A nine-year-old Thoroughbred mare was found to have a rare type of cancer called angiosarcoma in her nasal passages, specifically affecting the right frontal and maxillary sinuses. After she passed away, scientists examined her tissues under a microscope and discovered abnormal blood vessel cells and other related cells that indicated the presence of this tumor. This type of cancer is not commonly seen in horses' noses. Unfortunately, the mare's condition was serious, and the outcome was not favorable.

Abstract

An angiosarcoma involving the right frontal and maxillary sinuses in a nine-year-old Thoroughbred mare was studied post mortem by light and electron microscopy. Important diagnostic features included malignant endothelial cells lining ill-defined vascular spaces, supported by other vasoformative elements. Rhabdomyoblasts were also found. The tumour is apparently rarely seen in the nasal passages of the horse.
